After having a couple of months working on your stationery, you probably feel as if you know everything there is to know about these paper products. However, before you go to the post office to ship your invitations out, there are a few significant thing you need to consider that may have never crossed your mind. Thus, without further ado, here are five steps to take to make the most of your mailing.

1. Tissue paper inserts aren’t only for good looks.

Whilst putting tissue paper between the layers of your stationery suite can increase your prices, in addition, it can help stop the ink from smudging. If you opted to use a darker colored ink on your invitations or you went with thermography, your cards could rub together as they make their way via the mail. When it’s not too late, then add a bit of tissue paper to ensure your pretty paper arrives in pristine form.

2. Square invitations require more postage.

As a result of strange shape, square envelopes require more postage to mail. While this isn’t a massive monetary difference (roughly 20 cents per card, depending on the dimensions) you can certainly cut a few extra bucks by opting for a regular ol’ rectangular envelope. If you’re looking for other ways to save your invitations, opt for an RSVP postcard as opposed to a traditional mail-in response card, since the price of a postcard is under a standard stamp.

3. Never lick on the adhesive to close your envelopes.

To prevent having one of your precious invitations open en route, reinforce the closure method in your envelopes using glue or some other super strong adhesive. Licking is not only hard on your mouth (the flavor! Paper cuts!) , it also does not guarantee the package will arrive in 1 piece. To get a fairly touch, add a sticker or part of washi tape, but don’t rely on those things as the main closure approach. They can fall off or catch on other things during delivery.

4. Always take your cards inside the post office.

For additional reassurance (and to avoid risking your invitations having to combat the elements), never drop them off at an street-side mailbox. Should you flip them to someone in the post office directly, they are not as likely to get damaged in transit, and you’ll be able to ensure you’ve done everything correctly, from the postage to the writing of the speeches. This is an especially important step if you’re using vintage stamps — they can be tricky!

5. Ask the post office to hand cancel your own stamps.

Rather than allowing the post office run the invites via a machine-operated sorting system (which marks the envelope with thick lines at the top right corner and may harm the envelope at the process) ,ask them to “hand cancel” your invitations. It follows they will use a unique ink stamp to mark your invitation, and they will sort it by hand, lowering the danger of the damage. While some post offices refuse to do this, most are flexible if you pop during a slow time.
