After having a few months working on your own stationery, you likely feel like you know everything there is to know about those paper products. But before you go to the post office to ship your invitations out, there are a few major thing that you need to take into account that may have not crossed your mind. Thus, without further ado, here are a few steps to take to make the most of your mailing.

1. Tissue paper inserts aren’t only for good looks.

While putting tissue paper between the layers of the stationery package may boost your prices, in addition, it can help prevent the ink from smudging. If you chose to use a darker colored ink on your invitations or you went with thermography, your cards could rub together as they make their way through the mail. When it’s not too late, add a little tissue paper to make sure your pretty paper arrives in pristine shape.

2. Square invitations require more postage.

As a result of strange form, square envelopes require more postage to mail. Even though this isn’t a huge monetary difference (roughly 20 cents per card, depending on the dimensions) you can certainly cut a couple of extra bucks by opting for a regular ol’ rectangular envelope. If you’re trying to find different ways to save on your invitations, opt for an RSVP postcard rather than a traditional mail-in response card, since the cost of a postcard is under a normal postage.

3. Never lick on the glue to close your envelopes.

To prevent having one of your precious invitations open en route, fortify the final method on your envelopes using adhesive or any other super strong adhesive. Licking is not just hard on your mouth (the flavor! Paper cuts!) , it also doesn’t ensure that the package will arrive in 1 piece. For a pretty touch, include a sticker or part of washi tape, but don’t rely on those things as the most important closure approach. They can fall off or grab on other items during delivery.

4. Always take your cards inside the post office.

For additional peace of mind (and also to avoid risking your invitations having to battle the elements), never lose them off at an street-side mailbox. If you hand them to a person at the post office directly, they are less likely to get damaged in transit, and you can ensure you’ve done everything correctly, from the postage into the composing of the speeches. This is a particularly important step if you’re using classic stamps — they can be tricky!

5. Ask the post office to hand cancel your own stamps.

Instead of letting the post office run the invites via a machine-operated sorting system (which marks the envelope with thick lines in the top right corner and may damage the envelope at the procedure) ,ask them to “hand cancel” your invitations. It follows they will use a unique ink stamp to indicate your invitation, and they will type it by hand, reducing the danger of the harm. While some post offices refuse to try it, most are elastic if you pop in during a slow moment.
